European Joint Action on Cancer Screening

EUCanScreen Kick-off meeting

Riga, Latvia

EUCanScreen Kickoff LI 2
Kick off Riga

From September 24 to 27, 2024, the Institute of Clinical and Preventive Medicine (KPMI) of the University of Latvia will host the launch event of the “EUCanScreen” project. This project, which brings together 97 institutions from 29 countries, is one of the most significant European Commission initiatives in the fight against cancer. During the event at the University of Latvia House of Science, Jelgavas Street 3, Riga, medical and healthcare professionals will discuss effective screening methods and their potential to reduce cancer-related mortality.

“Implementing the EUCanScreen project will ensure significant progress by improving the efficiency of cancer screening programs and levelling their implementation across European countries. The project also provides us with a unique opportunity to foster closer cooperation between national and regional institutions across Europe, enhancing our ability to combat cancer through a systematic and coordinated approach,” Health Minister Hosams Abu Meri emphasises.

The goal of the “EUCanScreen” project is to promote accessible and effective screening in all European countries, including Latvia. To achieve this, one of the project’s priorities is to increase public awareness of the importance of early diagnosis. Another priority is to develop new screening methods for lung and stomach cancer. Therefore, in collaboration with leading health institutions in Latvia, such as the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC) and Riga Stradiņš University (RSU), current screening programs will be improved, and broader public engagement will be ensured. It should be noted that the project places special emphasis on early diagnosis of four of the most common types of cancer—breast, cervical, colorectal, and prostate cancer.
