Work Package 4 (WP4) of the EUCanScreen project aims to (1) ensure sustainable implementation of project results in participating countries and to (2) improve sustainable implementation of organised, population-based cancer screening programmes in countries of the European region where such programmes are not yet implemented or are implemented in a way that is not yielding the expected impact.

WP4 will develop innovative frameworks, guidelines, and tools to enhance cancer screening across Europe, addressing key aspects such as sustainability, barrier assessment, governance, prioritization, networking, and leadership. Specific objectives of WP4 are:

  • – To develop and pilot an innovative sustainability framework for cancer screening, including guidelines and a tool to support the effective implementation and operation of screening programmes across Europe (led by Paolo Giorgi Rossi, Italy and Andre Carvalho, IARC/WHO)
  • – To strengthen national governance models for cancer screening by developing robust and context-specific governance models by updating the previous model developed by the Joint Action CanCon (led by Sirpa Heinävaara, Finland and Andre Carvalho, IARC/WHO)
  • – To integrate and standardize barrier assessment methodologies by consolidating existing guidelines and tools into a unified European framework for barrier assessment in cancer screening (led by Silvia Deandrea, Italy and Andre Carvalho, IARC/WHO)
  • – To develop and pilot the innovative framework for prioritisation in cancer screening and prevention, incorporating guidelines and tools to support evidence-based decision-making at the national level (led by Harry de Koning, Netherlands and co-led by Carlo Senore, Italy; Sirpa Heinävaara, Finland and Iben Fasterholdt, Denmark)
  • – To enhance the sustainability of cancer screening programmes by establishing a Governmental Advisory Board and developing a sustainable cross-border peer-support network of multidisciplinary experts engaged in screening leadership, governance, and operational management (led by Urška Ivanuš, Slovenia; Mārcis Leja, Latvia; Arianna Khatchadourian, ECL and Andre Carvalho, IARC/WHO).
  • – To facilitate the effective utilization of EUCanScreen project results through workshops on sustainability and leadership (led by Urška Ivanuš and Taja Ložar, Slovenia; Andre Carvalho IARC/WHO and Wendy Yared, ECL);
  • – To conduct in-depth assessment of sustainability, governance, barriers, and prioritisation of screening in exemplary countries in collaboration with advisory countries (led by WP4 leadership).

By achieving these objectives, the project will contribute to enhancing the sustainability of cancer screening programmes across Europe, ultimately reducing the cancer burden and addressing inequalities both within and between European countries.
